The Commoner is located in Hotel Monaco on Strawberry way in Pittsburgh, PA. This eclectic new gathering spot isn’t your common city eatery- it’s quite the opposite.
We stopped in on a Saturday night after the Garth Brooks concert. The place was packed to the brim- there wasn’t a seat to be had anywhere. We shoved our way up to the bar, and ordered a few glasses of delicious Malbec. To our surprise, it was quite the heavy pour- at least 10 ounces.
The food at the Commoner is sophisticated, and not typical Pittsburgh fare. Offerings include Hand-Cut Fries with Charred Tomato-Ketchup (this is Pittsburgh- where’s the Heinz?), Scampi and Chips ($12.00), Daily Oysters ($12.00), Cheddar Board with Apple Butter, Dried Fruit and Walnut Bread ($14.00), Chopped Liver ($13.00), and Smoked Beef Tartare, (14.00). Dinner entrees include the PA Burger, ($17.00), Seafood Chowder, ($28.00), Cedar Plank Scottish Salmon, ($28.00), Lamb shank, ($32.00). The Commoner Porterhouse will set you back $51.00.
The hotel is tastefully decorated with VERY contemporary art and fixtures- clearly, this facility is designed to attract a young, hip crowd.
Next week, I get to sample to food at the Commoner.
Stay tuned.
